DEMONSTRATION OVER DECISION OF EMPIRE FEATHERWEIGHT BOUT
Recd. 10 p.m. London, March 19. There was a demonstration, lasting several minutes, at the end of the Empire feather-weight title fight at the Albert Hall, which was given on points, after 15 rounds lo the Aidgate tighter, Al. Phillips, against Cliff Anderson, of British Guinna. Phillips, in the fourth round, took three counts of nine and one of three. The bell saved him.
Boxing critics all agree that Anderson should have been named the winner. The referee’s decision was booed and catcalled for nearly ten minutes.
“It was a bad decision, Anderson wag definitely the better boxer in practically every round,” says the “Daily Herald’s’’ critic. The “Daily Express’’ says, “Anderson lost th e Empire title by the referee’s decision, and he is debarred from fighting for the British title by his colour.” “The referee took over a minute to reckon up his score-card. I disagree flatly with his decision,’!’ stated th.e “Daily Mail.’’
Anderson’s manager has lodged a protest with the Board of Control, but the referee s decision being final, nothing more than a return contest is likely.
