FLAMETHROWER TO COMBAT NOXIOUS WEEDS
Modern methods of combating the noxious weeds menace are continually being investigated by the Rengitikei County Connell -and the .Rest move will be an endeavour to obtain a large flamethrower of the type used by the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific war.
“This would be a most effective weapon," said the noxious weeds inspector, Mr. J.’ Robinson, at the monthly meeting yesterday. “Even if we coqld obtain the loan of one it would be a great help." Flame-throwers of this type threw a jet 145 feet ahead and could be operated by one man. The oil was sprayed ahead of the flames and a vast area of weed-infested country could be dealt with in a very short time.
One councillor commented that a farmer may as well go ’about with a lighted match as the small bamethrowing device at present issued tor clearing noxious weeds. The council authorised Mr. Robinson to try and obtain a flame-thrower of the American type.
