SANDY’S CORNER

WE MISSED. On Wednesday, passing by Wanganui’s Trafalgar Corner, where men kiss goodbye to the quids that, help pay the family allowance of 10 bob a week, we wished we had been a cartoonist; no, better still, a photographer. Among the people who left that building of grim taxation there was but one man who smiled. His features lit up the surrounding gloom, in sharp contrast to the grim expressions of others who came down the stairs with him. What a photo it would have made--the grim multitude, the one bright face. “Don’t look now,” said the girl from the department, to her friend as they followed down the stairs, “hut you see that rather stoutish chap, with the smile. Well, the boss had to refund him 10 quid taxation overpaid!” GOING ON HOLIDAY. After to-morrow we go on holiday. Like Mr. Fraser, Mr. Nash, Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Mason, all the heads of the country, we like a trip now and again, but. not being a head in this glorious paradise of socialism, we have no wings to fly with, so we must needs walk. When we reach the sea we stop, sit down, admire the view and feel glad that we have nothing to do with moving whatever levers men move, or strings men pull, to keep this island paradise of socialism on the rails. While we are at the sea Mum will give us friendly advice, which she says is akin to an annual spring cleaning of mind. We look upon it as an annual spring cleaning of the Corner, and when Mum spring cleans it is best to keep out of the way. Any of you people who have been on holiday lately, could you tell us whether they still push and shove in queues to get seats in trains, cups of tea in refreshment rooms, rooms in pubs, or should we stick to walking and get there first? Soon, we will be so socially great, so conversant with distant scenes that we wB! not need a holiday at all, or, in other words, we will look upon going to work as a holiday, and what we once thought of as a holiday as darned hard work #
