BUGLER OF THE THIRDS

The death of Mr. David Strachan, of Wanganui, a prominent boot and shoe retailer, recalls the South African War. Mr. Strachan was bugler in the Third Contingent, which, under Major Jowsey, left New Zealand in the Kright Templar on February 17, 190 u. What was left of that Contingent returned about April the following year. It is of interest to recall tliht the other bugler in the same contingent was Mr. W. J. Thorn, former M.P. for Thames, who recently has been appointed High Commissioner for New Zealand in Canada. He was the North Island bugler, tylr. Strachan the South Island.
