AUSTRALIA’S BUDGET
DIRECT TAXATION UNTOUCHED SALES AND PETROL TAXES MODIFIED Recd. 8.30 p.m. Canberra, Nov. 7. A Budget providing for an expenditure this financial year of £405,000,000 was presented to-day to the Labour caucus meeting, where failure to cut direct taxation may be criticised. According to Budge! estimates the Commonwealth revenue for will be £324,000,000. The main relief provided is a cut of £18,000,000, mostly sales tax on clothing and petrol tax. Some Ministers claim that Cabinet meetings gave the impression that some further relief might be expected early next year. Caucus adopted the Budget as submitted by the Federal Cabinet. The Budget will be presented to Parliament by Mr. Chiflley next week.
Caucus rejected a motion Jo eliminate wage earners of £2OO from the taxation field. There will be no direct taxation cuts in the Budget, but the Government, will make regular reviews of the financial position with a view to making further reductions when the financial position permits. Members of the party are believed to have expressed the view that at this stage it would bp more popular to reduce saks tax, which affects the community as a whole, rather than differentiate by reducing taxation on incomes. 1
