CROWDS WELCOME MR. S. G. HOLLAND, M. P.
VISIT TO WANGANUI An enthusiastic reception was given to the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. S. G. Holland, M.P., when he visited Wanganui yesterday to address election meet,i ngs in support of the National Party candidates, Mr. E. W. Merewether, Wanganui, and Mr. H. H. Marumaru, Vi estern Maori. Mr. Holland arrived at lunch time from New Plymouth, where he spoke on Wednesday night, and during yesterday afternoon visited Putiki Pa. There he spoke to a gathering of Maoris on National Party policy on native affairs, and then returned to
Foster's Hotel, where a crowd of about 200 greeted him with cheers. Mr. Holland was welcomed to Wanganui by the chairman of the Wanganui branch of the National Party, Mr. W. E. Robbie, and briefly replied, after which the crowd sang "For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” The Opera House was filled to capacity for Mr. Holland's meeting last night, and a public address system night. Mr. Holland was received with cheers when he entered the Opera House, and frequent applause punctuated his speech. When a motion of thanks and confidence was proposed at the conclusion of Mr. Holland's address the stage was covered in a shower of streamers by the cheering audience.
Mr Holland spent the night in Wanganui, and this morning will address a meeting at Feilding. In the efte” noon he will speak at. Levin, and will go south by to-night's ferry steamer for an electioneering tour of the South Island.
