“APPLIED LUNACY”

WHAT MR. HOLLAND SAID. The actual statement made by Mr. Holland when the matter came before the House of Representatives is to be found in volume 252 ol Hansard at page 556, as follows: "I believe in superannuation, but to pass a Superannuation Bill and merely explain that we are going to hand out benefits here, there, and everyhere is one thing, while to find the money is an entirely different matter. It is all very well for honourable members opposite to laugh, but they subscribe to their party's view that this scheme is applied Christianity. I say it is applied lunacy to commit oneself to expenditure before the requisite income is reasonably assured.” Mr. Holland's remarks have been misrepresented by Ministers and members of the Labour Party, usually by omitting the words in the last sentence after "applied lunacy.”
