MARTON TENNIS CLUB. “The past season has been the most enjoyable one the club has experienced for many years," stated the president, Mr. M. C. Fenwicke, in his report covering the activities of the Marton Tennis Club, presented at the annual meeting “On the whole, the weather conditions were favourable and playing conditions good. With the war over, many old members commenced playing again

and there was an all-round genera] increase in the membership as well. There was a total membership of 97 (men 24, ladies 73) as against. 59 the

previous season,” continued the report. “Inter-club matches were resumed with Wanganui, Wanganui East (2), Bulls (2), Taihape, Rata, and Feilding. The Anniversary Day tournament had to be abandoned on account of rain.

“Competitive tennis was commenced again, the results of the various events being: Men’s championship singles, Mr. H. Aldrich; men’s hand - cap singles, Mr. T. Dommett; women’s championship singles, Miss E. Fitches; women's handicap singles. Miss M. Le Cren; women's handicap doubles, Mesdames J. Orgias and M. Wysocki; Rose Bowl (handicap combined doubles), Mr. N. Ingle and Mrs. M. Wysocki. “The early season dance resulted in a net. profit, of £2O. The financial position of the club has improved considerably. Commencing the season with a debit, balance of £lB 19s 3d. the club finished with a credit of £63 13s 3d, a cash improvement of £B2 12s 6d. The cluh is faced with a fair amount of expenditure—the pavilion requiring complete renovations and painting, and new nets, as well as repairs to wire netting and outside equipment required.

“Mr. E. D. Oliver presented the club with two tie-pins. These were used to replace the men’s challenge buttons, which were lost,” concluded the reoort.

Officers elected were: President, Mr. C. A. Gregg; v'.ce-presidents, Messrs. S. J. Gibbons, A. L. Wheeler, F. J. Christensen, and M. C. Fenwicke; club captain, to be appointed; ladies’ captain, Mrs. M. McLennan; secretary, Mr. W. McCully; <’’eas’irer, Miss A. Ingles; committee. Messrs. H. Aidrich, H. McLean, I. C. RAINFALL FOR MARTON Last month 2.85 inches of rain fell in Marton, compared with 2.19 inches in September last year, according to figures supplied by Mr. R. Dukeson. The month’s average rainfall is 3.35 inches. Rain fell on 11 days last month, the first fortnight being comparatively dry. Falls were recorded on seven consecutive days from September 21 to 27. Heaviest fall was on September 24, when .59 inch was recorded.

HOME SERVICE ASSOCIATION A meeting of the committee of the Marton Home Servicemen's Association was held on Wednesday night, and in the absence of Mr. lan Price (vice-president) Mr. R. J. Callan presided over Messrs. N. J. Clarke, C. Frost, G. E. Lucas and W. L. Faull (secretary. Apologias were received from Messrs. H. Edmonds and M. Fisher. Ten applications for membership were received and accepted. Mr. lan Price arrived during the meeting and was appointed acting-president. This office became vacant owing to Mr. J. T. Williamson’s transfer to Featherston. Owing to counterattractions the fortnightly social evenings had to be cancelled for & I time, but these will commence again lon Tuesday, October 8. Members are requested to play the first rounds of the club championship and junior handicap this week-end. Anyone unable to play this week-ena is asked to play his match as soon as possible.
