BIG HARRIER RACE BULLS TO MARTON

One of the major harrier races on the programme of the Marton Club will be held to-morrow with the running of the Bulls-Marton road race of 9-\ miles. The race will start at the Bulls Post Office at 2.15 p.m. and should finish at the Marton Post Office at approximately 3 pm.

Thirty-seven nominations have been received, therefore there should be plenty of competition. The last

time this race was held was in 1941, when A. Bevege (Wanganui) was first home. This harrier will be a competitor to-morrow.

The winner of the race will receive the Chris Marshall Cup, which he will hold for a year, and a miniature trophy-

At the conclusion of the race competitors will be entertained by the Marton club at afternoon tea in the Parish Hall. Marton competitors are to assemble at the gasworks at 1.30 p m. for transport to Bulls. OPENING OF BOWLING Wet or fine, the official opening of the 1946-47 season for the Marton Bowling Club will take place to-mor-row afternoon at 2.15 o’clock. The green is in splendid order and the gardens a mass of colourful blooms, which should make a picturesque setting for the short ceremony that is io take place The president of the club, Mr. O. Brabyn, will deliver a short speech and declare the season open.

The club is extending to the general public a cordial invitation to he present, and specially invites the ladies. Members of the club are asked to bring a basket.

If no further heavy rain falls between now and Saturday, the green wi’l be available for a roll-up. The club has a strong membership, and there is every reason to expect a bumper attendance to-morrow. TENNIS CLUB TROPHIES Trophies won during the past season were presented to the winners by the retiring president, Mr. M. C. Fenwicke, at the annual meeting of the Marton Lawn Tennis Club on Wednesday night.

Mr. J. Orgias, who did not seek reelection as secretary, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his past services to the club. Miss M. Wilkie was elected a new member of the club. The following resignations were received with regret :—Mesdames R. Clarke. J. Orgias, S. Morrison, J. Sinclair, and Misses M. Shannon, P. Orgias. L. Morrison, P. E. Seeker, and Mr. J. Orgias.

FIFTH PLUNKET SHIELD CRICKET TEAM?

An application by The Hutt Cricket Association for affiliation to the Minor Associations has been supported by the Manawatu Cricket Association. Notification of the application was received from the New Zealand Cricket Council. which requested comment. It was stated by the president, Mr. A. M. Ongley, that the addition of another minor association could possibly mean the creation of a fifth Plunket Shield district. It was decided that all minor associations in the Wellington Province be circularised, calling a meeting for October 16 at Palmerston North to discuss the selection of a fifth Plunket Shield team.

At this week's meeting of the management committee of the Rangitikei Cricket Association the question of The Hutt’s application for affiliation as a minor association was briefdiscussed. The delegate to the biennial conference in Christchurch at the end of the month (Mr. D. A. Cameron) was authorised to use his discretion when voting on the subje~* The Wellington Cricket Association has already supported the proposal.

LOCAL HOCKEY TEAMS TO TRAVEL TO-MORROW

Some 160 hockey players will take part in the open 11-a-side ladies' hockey tournament being held in Palmerston North to-morrow. Four clubs from Rangitikei will be competing—United, Kia Ora, Bulls and Huimai.

AFRICAN WAR VETERANS The winners at the South African War Veterans’ flag 50C evening held last Tuesday were Messrs. J. Caldwell, F. Gibbs, W. Holland and J. Jefferson. Second prizes went to Mesdames E. Sayers, O. Brabyn, L. Gordon and Mr. L. Gordon. Mystery prizes were won by Messrs. W. Holland and C. Bracewell. The travelling prize was won by Mr. Osborne, and competition winners were Mesflamps D. Cairncross, S. Ensom, Ornsfein, and Miss Whyman. The next, evening will be held on Monday, October 14.
