MARTON BOXING

SPIRITED BOUTS PLEASE BIG CROWD (0.C.) Marton, May 21. A capacity house to-night was thoroughly satisfied by the bright entertainment provided, when lhe Marton Boxing Association staged its first amateur tournament or the season. All the bouts were fast moving and some of the rounds aroused great enthusiasm among the spectators, which included a number of female fans. Altogether J 8 bouts were staged and (he association is to be congratulated upon the efficient manner in which the tourney was conducted, there being no delays between the bouts. Mr. C. Matson (Palmerston North) and Mr. B. Drew (Marton) were the referees, and the judging was clone by Dr. K. Christie (Wanganui) and Mr. R. P. Sherriff (Marton). The timekeepers were Messrs. D. Thomson and J. McDowell while the duties of announcer were carried out by Mr. G. H. Den bow. THU BOUTS G. Stent (Marton), 5.5, boxed a draw with Davis (Wanganui), 5.12, after a very spirited contest. The Marton lad scored well with his left, but Davis fought aggressively and drew blood from Stent in the second round. The decision was popular. Cronin (Wanganui), 5.12, outpointed Hall (Wanganui), 5.4, alter an even contest. Both boxers displayed good footwork, but Cronin’s right jabs worried Hall. D. H. Jones (Marton). 9.11, beat H. Barnett (Palmerston North) after a bout full of heavy punches to the face. In the first round Barnett was gettingunder Jones’ defence, but over "the last two, the Marton boy shielded off many blows, and administered punishment to the visiting boxer. In >ound two, Barnett was down for the count of four. The last round saw Jones in an aggressive mood. The bout thoroughly pleased the crowd.

McNab (Feilding), 8.1, gained a decision over McClintock (Wanganui), 8.3. The Wanganui boy had an advantage in reach and landed same solid punches to McNab’s body and face. Over the next two rounds, McNab went on the offensive and in round three got in some telling blows to McClintock’s face.

Mahoney (Ohakea), 7.6, outpointed Baldwin (Wanganui), 8.6, after a fastmoving bout. Mahoney showed aggressiveness early in the bout, but Baldwin later was connecting continually with the Air Force boy’s face. Near the end, Baldwin was running into Mahoney’s straight right It was a very even bout. V. Simcox (Marton), 9.4, beat Huddlestone (Feilding), 9.4, on a technical knock-out in round three, and it was a popular victory for the Marton lad. Simcox led with his right freely and appeared fit. Simcox received a damaged nose in. round two, in which blows were traded evenly. Soon after the opening of the final round, the Feilding lad was down for the count of two. then administered heavy punishment until the referee stopped the bout. Gordon (Feilding), 8.10, beat Weston (Ohakea), 9.4, the latter’s second giving in after the first round. Weston was down for counts of four and six in the first round, the loser taking repeated blows to the face. D. Downs (Marton), 8.0, boxed a draw with C. Wong (Feilding), 8.4, after a willing bout Downs took heavy punishment in round two, but fought back gamely. The Chinese boy went in with his defence right open looking for a finishing blow but he ran into terrific punishment. M. Lourie (Marton), 6.0, won from R. Newman (Marton), 6.0, .in the catchweight contest. Both boys showed good defence and pretty footwork, the winner gaining points when he assumed the attack in the final round. The boys demonstrated that they had received some expert tuition. London (Feilding), 8.0, outpointed Thomson (Wanganui), 8.0, after a quiet but even bout. London was feinting cleverly in the early part of the bout, and his solid hitting characterised the final round.

Adams (Wanganui), 10.4, proved too good for T. Allen (Marlon), 10.0. The Marton boxer took severe punishment, some of Adams’ blows carrying plenty of weight. Allen administered some jabs to body and face, but they carried little sting.

Craveno (Feilding), 8.8, beat Ket> (Wanganui), 8.12, on a technical knock-out in the second round. The bout was marked by some nimble ducking by the winner, combined with some solid punches.

Barnett (Palmerston North), 9.6, out-boxed Brown (Taihape), 9.2. Brown gained hi’s points because he showed attacking ability. It was not a very good exhibition of boxing. R. Baldwin (Wanganui), 8.8, outpointed T. Lyons (Marton), 9.0, in an evenly-contested exhibition. In the early part of the bout Lyons connected better with his blows, but Baldwin was the better offensive lad over the last two rounds.

Kiddy (Ohakea), 10.0, gained the decision over Sparling (Taihape), 10.4. Both boxers mixed it willingly, but Kiddy displayed better footwork and evaded many blows by his nimble ducking. Mitchell (Wanganui), 9.4, won from L. Barnett (Palmerston North), 9.10, on a technical knock-out in the third round. The winner had a decided advantage in reach, and solid hitting marked his fight throughout. Mitchell displayed a good defence and hardly received a telling blow. Barnett put up a game fight. Murray (Wanganui), 11.4, gained the decision over Goldsmith (Marton), 11.6, in an even bout, the winner getting in some solid punches over the final round.
