DIPHTHERIA CASES ON INCREASE HERE
STRAIN ON HOSPITAL ACCOMMODATION Diphtheria cases, which number 30 at present, are beginning to tax the accommodation at the Wanganui Public Hospital, fie medical superintendent, Dr. H L. Widdowson, said yesterday. Four cases were admitted on Saturday, one on Monday and two yesterday. of the patients are children, but there are also a number of adults. The arresting of the disease takes a month at least, but in bad cases may involve three months in hospital. With an increasing number of sufferers coming into hospital daily the authorities are beginning to find difficulty in providing beds. Dr. Widdowson said that none of the patients admitted with diphtheria had received immunisation treatment previously, and he urged parents to have their children given this treatment as a protection against the disease, which was very prevalent at present. The beneficial results of immunisation had been amply proved, he said. Another precaution suggested by Dr. Widdowson was that parents should keep their children out of crowds and away from entertainments where they make contact with the disease through others.
