OIL-FIRED LOCOMOTIVES SUGGESTED

REDUCING FIRE HAZARDS IN DRY WEATHER Diesel or oil-fired locomotives would reduce the fire hazards in dry weather and were independent of coal supplies, said Cr. V. Smith, when the Rangitiki County Council, at its monthly meeting yesterday, was discussing outbreaks of fires in county areas during the dry weather last monlh. “If the Railways Department went in for this class of equipment there would be fewer fires and no delays caused by unsuitable coal or lack of sufficient supplies,” Cr. Smith added. Cr. A. S. Coleman said that fires alongside the railway line were often caused by passing locomotives. He believed the clinkers were discharged indiscriminately from the fire-boxes. Cr. H. G. Stewart: There have been protests from one end of the North Island to the other about railway engines starting fires. The chairman, Cr. K. W. Dalrymple: Considering the poor class of coal used on the railways they are not doing badly. No resolution was before the meeting and the discussion lapsed.
