Noxious Weeds Again Although it has discussed the subject several times during the past year, and reversed decisions twice, the Wanganui County Council will again debate the question of whether it should assume control of noxious weeds when •a motion to the effect comes before it at the monthly meeting to-day. Another matter of interest to be considered will be the possibility of extending afforestation operations in the country.

Tomato Prices Kept Up Tomatoes are still fixed at ceiling prices in Wanganui by the Internal Marketing Division, and retailers report that they are unable to obtain any lines for preserving or sauce making. At the corresponding period last year prices were down and housewives were able to obtain good supplies for sauce making. So far there is no indication when the I.M.D. will lower the wholesale price. Shortage of Wagons “A shortage of railway wagons has considerably retarded delivery of our output,” said the engineer, Mr. S. A. R. Mair, referring at the jnonthly meeting of the Rangitikei County Council yesterday to the crushing works at Kakariki. He added that the mill had worked continuously during February, many urgent orders being required while the weather remained ideal for road repair work. Red Cross Sunday Red Cross Sunday will be observed in Wanganui on Sunday, and a special service will be held in the Opera House in the afternoon. The service will be conducted by the Rev. A. C. McLean, president of the Red Cross Centre, who will be assisted bf the Ven. Archdeacon J. R. Young. The address will be given by Major C. N. Armstrong, M.C. The procession which was to have preceded the service will not be held. “Sally” Rehearsal Enthusiasm was a feature of the first rehearsal of the comic opera “Sally,” held under the auspices of the Wanganui Amateur Musical and Dramatic Society in the Savage Club Hall last night. There was an at • tendance of between 50 and 60, which augurs well for the success of tins production. It was stated last night that more male members would be welcomed.

Main Highway Repairs Plans would be formed in the near future for reforming, metalling and surfacing the Curl’s Bridge-Upper Tutaenui main highway irom Marton Borough to the Upper Tutaenul corner, so that the work could be approved and put in hand as soon as funds were made available, said the engineer, Mr. S. A. R. Mair, at the monthly meeting yesterday of the Rangitikei County Council. He added that because of the repair gangs being engaged on the Onepuhi Bridge, work on the Mangaone Stream Bridge had been at a standstill.

Dangerous Repair Work The task of repairing the Onepuhi Bridge, opened recently after being closed for several weeks, was delicate and often dangerous, said the county engineer, Mr. S. A. R. Mair, at the monthly meeting yesterday of the Rangitikei County Council. The work successfully carried out, however, reflected great credit on the two county bridge foremen, Messrs. A. S. Lewis and F. Jeeves, and their assistants. “Last month further defects developed in the bridge,” Mr. Mair added. “New anchors were sunk for the eastern end of the western suspension span and the delicate job of releasing the bridge from its former defective anchors was carried out satisfactorily. The bridge has since been opened for light traffic not exceeding one ton.” As the Rangitikei River was at present very low it was unfortunate that approval had not been received for the proposals submitted for driving test piles for the new bridge. Because of the state of the old structure the new bridge was urgently required.
