TO ASK CHURCHILL
SECRETARY-GENERAL OF U.N. ASSEMBLY
Recd. 9.30 p.m. London, Jan. 15. Delegates to the United Nations Assembly are discussing an approacti to Mr. Churchill to ask him to be the first Secretary-General, says the “Daily Mail’s” diplomatic correspondent, but most are very doubtful whether he would accept. The development, which originated among South American delegates, indicates the dilemma of all delegates, who feel that only the greatest figure is suited to the task of seeing the United Nations well and truly launched.
Other names before the Security Council when it meets towards the end of the week will be those of General Eisenhower, Mr. Lester B. Pearson, Canadian Ambassador to Washington, and Commander Harold Staffen, Governor of Minnesota. In all the circumstances Mr. Pearson at present has the greatest chance of election.
