“TOO GENTLEMANLY”

AUSTRALIA AND N.Z. MISS COUNCIL SEATS Reed. 7.30 p.m. London, Jan. 15, "Amid vigorous lobbying and ticket exchanging in the United Nations Assembly, Australia and New Zealand missed getting on the Economic and Social Council because they were too gentlemanly," says the “Sydney Sun’s" special correspondent. “Close cohesion between the two Dominions, which is written into the Australia-New Zealand Agreement was not very obvious in the light for places on this Council. Consequently southern Pacific countries are completely without representation. It was understood and expected that when New Zealand was having a close ballot with Yugoslavia for the eighteenth seat Australia would throw in her voice from the rostrum in favour ol New Zealand, but the expected just did not happen.

“New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, won esteem by withdrawing from the ballot, but a strong feeling among observers was that he should never have been placed in the position to make this decision. It was undoubtedly unfortunate because it was Mr. Frasers eloquence which began bringing votes for Australia in the earlier election to the Social Security Council.”

Mr. Makin, who leads the Australian delegation, said Australia would have nothing to do with tickets and lobbying. He regretted that neither Australia nor New Zealand was on the Economic and Social Council.

Mr. Makin deprecated the suggestion that there was a political dog-fi.ght in lobbying and voting at. the Assembly.
