TRIBAL HONOURS

TE HORE TAKARANGI FUNERAL AT PUTIKL With full tribal ceremonial the funeral of the late Te Hore Takarangi, Chief of the Whanganui trib" was held at Putiki yesterday afternoon. There was a large concourse of people and representatives of different tribes. Tribes represented at the funeral were Kahungunu (Hawke’s Bay), Tuwharetoa (Taupo/, Raukawa and Ngati Toa (both of Otaki), Wai-nui-a-Rua (Wanganui River), Ngati Apa (Rangitikei), Ngarauru, Ruanui, and Ati Awa (all ot Taranaki), and Whitt Tama (Taihape). In a high tribute to the memory of the deceased, the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, Bishop of Aotearoa, speaking on the Marae, said they had gathered to pay their last respects to one who bore an honoured name. "Te Hore Takarangi was highly esteemed and loved by all, for he had a kindly nature,” said the Bishop. He had been most faithful in the discharge of his duties to his tribe right until his death. The Bishop recalled how he himself had made his acquaintance about 50 years ago when he was at Futiki. As a mark of respect for his memory the Bishop said he had travelled from Hawke's Bay to be present at the funeral and to extend to the members or the deceased family and tribe his deep sympathy in their loss.

For more than 30 years Te Hore Takarangi had been a lay reader of the Church. He was a deeply religious man and hi sexample was one that all could follow, said the Bishop. Following a service outside the meeting house at the pa, a service was held at the Putiki Maori Memorial Church, after which Interment took place in the Putiki cemetery. .In addition to the Bishop, the clergy present included Canon W. G. Williams (Hawke's Bay), Archdeacon J. R. Young, Rev. P. Kokiri (Putiki), and Rev. P. Te Muera (Otaki), and Mr. W. Emia, lay reader. The cortege included the Mayor *Hon. W. J. Rogers), and Messrs. C. R. White (town clerk), J. B. F. Cotterill <M.P. for Wanganui), Matiu Ratana (M.P. for Western Maori), Judge Dykes (of the Native Land Court), L. J. Brooker (Registrar of the Native Department, Wanganqi), A. Crawford, R. E. Smith, and E. Christie (representing the trustees of the Wanganui Museum), W. D. Young (representing the Wanganui R.S.A.) and J. Karaitiana (representing the Young Maori Party).

The pallbearers were the Hon. W. J. Rogers and Messrs. M. Ratana M.P., L. J. Brooker, T. H. Hekenui (representing Wanganui tribes), H. Maui

(representing Taranaki tribes) and W. Tuirl (representing the Tuwharetoa tribe).
