CITIZEN’S DEATH
mr. e. h. t. McDonald RUGBY PLAYER AND SCULLER The death occurred suddenly yesterday morning of Mr. Edgar Hubert Thomas McDonald, a former Wanganui Rugby representative player and sculler. He was aged 63 years. Born in Oxford, Canterbury, Mr. McDonald was educated at the Marist Brothers’ School Timaru. Leaving school he joined the staff of the National Bank of New Zealand in Hokitika. Later he was transferred to Wanganui, where he became prominent in both Rugby and rowing. As a Rugby player he represented Wanganui with marked ability in many matches and was an outstanding wing forward. He played for Wanganui-Taranaki combined against Hardings Anglo-Welsh side, the match being played in New Plymouth. He also played wing three-quarter in some representative games. Mr. McDonald played for the Wanganui Rugby Football Club.
As a sculler and oarsman he represented the Wanganui Rowing Club at championship rgattas, and was a contemporary of the Mr. G. H. Marshall, who died earlier in the week. In 1908, at the championship regatta at Napier, Mr. McDonald was runner-up to Whelch, for the New Zealand single sculls title.
Leaving the employ of the National Bank, Mr. McDonald joined the Bank of New Zealand, and was stationed in Wanganui, Auckland and Hawera. More than 20 years ago he resigned from the Bank of New Zealand to take charge of the wool department of Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd., Wanganui. He was in that position at the time of his death. From a small department Mr. McDonald built it up to its pre-ent status, with its large store at Wanganui East. Mr. McDonald’s wife pre-deceased him a few years ago. He is survived by two sons and one daughter. The sons are Messrs Gordon and Nevison McDonald (Okoia). The daughter is Mrs. John Redwood, Lower Hutt, Wellington. The Rev. Father Alex. McDonald, of lhe Society of Mary, Timaru. and Messrs L. R. McDonald (Gore), and R. J. McDonald (Wanganui), are brothers. Mrs. Roy Campion, of “Okirae,” is a sister.
The funeral will take place tomorrow morning at the Aramoho cemetery, after Requiem Ma s at SI. Mary’s Church at 9 am.
