Rotary Club Speaker The speaker for the Wanganui Rotary Club luncheon on Monday will be the Rev. V. W. Joblin, of St. Peter’s Church, Gonville. False Fire Alarm

The Wanganui Central fire brigade (two engines) responded to a call to the “Chronicle” building in Wicksteed Place last night just before 10.30. Heat in the stereo room caused the automatic alarm system to function.

After a spell of dry weather the Wanganui River was at a low level in the upper reaches this week, with the result that shallow-draught river vessels have had difficulty in negotiating the rapids above Pipiriki. After rain over-night the river was discoloured yesterday and a slight rise in the upper reaches was appreciated Excessive rain fell last month, but November has been particularly dry. Massed Bands’ Display Bands from Feilding, Palmerston North and Hawera will visit Wanganui this week-end for the massed bands’ display which is to be held at Cook’s Gardens to-morrow afternoon. In all, nine bands will take part, and the number of bandsmen is expected to exceed 200. A feature of the programme will be the well-known and spectacular serpentine march. Proceeds will go to the present carnival appeal for the R.S.A., nurses and Scottish Society.

Carnival Gymkhana Wide interest is being taken in the carnival gymkhana to be held at the Wanganui Racecourse to-day. The programme includes horse events, wood chopping and the New Zealand shearing championship. By far the larger section is that devoted to horses, there being 18 ring events ana nine jumping events. Competitors from all parts of the district are expected to take part. Proceeds will go to f he present combined R.SA., nurses and Scottish appeal.

Y.M.C.A. Service Honours Reference to service honours gained uy members of the Wanganui Y.M.C.A. was made at a meeting ol •he Board of Management held on Thursday night. The D.F.C. had been won by Mr. Mervvn Croker, and members of the Junior Optimist s’ Club, Messrs Len Rainer, Alan Walker and Alex Simpson. “All these young men were active members of the Y.M.C.A. and it is the policy of the board not only to give them a good welcome on their return, but to make use whenever possible of their experience and ability for the benefit of the youth of Wanganui,” said the president, Mr. D. F. Glennie.

High Winds and Rain. Boisterous northerly weather experienced in Wanganui on Thursday culminated in a stormy night, during which the wind changed to the northwest. There was much heavy rain and some sharp squalls, with a brief hail storm shortly after 8 a.m. yesterday. There was also thunder and lightning. The wind was apparently more boisterous in inland districts, particularly the Ohakune area where telephone and telegraph lines were interrupted. The weather in Wanganui yesterday was fine with passing clouds and,a fresh westerly wind. At noon the barometer was rising, the reading being 29.83 in. Temperatures were pleasantly cool after the humid conditions of previous days.
