CITY COUNCIL DEBATE

REQUEST FOR BUILDING PERMIT The question of whether the Wanganui City Council should grant a permit for the erection of a petrol station on the brow of St. John's Hill, between Parsons and St. Leonard's Streets, was debated at the monthly meeting last night. Cr. T. N. Dickson said that ope aspect to be considered was whether a bowser station on this site, located on the eastern side of the Great North Road, would create a danger to traffic using the main highway. For this reason, he added, he would move that the request be declined. Other councillors- raised the question of town planning, and the city engineer. Mr. L. F. Row, said that care had to be exercised when granting permits for the erection of business or industrial premises in residential areas. Complaints had been received regarding certain premises in the suburbs and he had given instructions that in future all such applications for permits he referred to the council. When a definite policy of town planning was decided on the council would know exactly where it stood. , , , Cr. A. R. Donaldson, who seconded Cr. Dickson’s motion, said there would he objection from the rest of the trade to the establishment of a new petrol station. Cr. S. J Harris said the applicant was a returned soldier. The council should do everything possible to help him. . “We have no town-planning scheme at present." said Cr. A. J. Pritchard, who added that he could not see bow a bowser station in this locality would be any more dangerous to traffic than petrol stations elsewhere in the city. J An amendment moved by the Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, that the opinion of the citv solicitor be obtained, was subsequently carried on a show of hands.'
