The Wanganui City Council has decided to invite tenders for the lease of the Parkville premises in Ridgway Street. This decision was reached last night when a report of the Finance Committee was adopted. A special report on the leasing condition of the premises was submitted bv the town clerk, Mr. C. R. White, and the city treasurer, Mr. F. J. Best. National Savings. Last week 261 towns, including all the principal centres attained their National Savings quotas, and all postal districts in the Dominion were again I successful in reaching their district , objectives. From the inception of the I National Savings movement up to June 30 a total of 470,999 accounts have been opened, including 174,883 “group” accounts in 8,377 groups. Of the total number over 15000 were opened during the 1945 Victory Loan campaign. Condition of Streets “The council is making every endeavour to spend judiciously, in the interests of ratepayers and citizens as a whole, lhe finance available,” stated the Works Committee, reporting at a meeting of the Wanganui City Council last night that it had carefully considered a complaint, regarding the conditions of streets in the city. The committee added that in view of the miles of streets to be maintained in Wanganui, the position compared favourably with other centres.

Industrial Development A request made by the Organisation for National Development tor particulars of land in Wanganui suitable for industrial development has been considered by the Works Committee of the City Council. In a report to the council last night the committee recommended that the director be advised that no town-planning scheme has yet been adopted for tne city. “The council will endeavour at all times, however, to furnish any information which may be required and to co-operate with the department in its activities,” tne report added. Breeze Due To-day.

One her first visit to Wanganui since being released from war service in the Pacific with the Royal NewZealand Navy, the Canterbury Company’s coastal motor-ship Breeze departed from Timaru at six o’clock on Monday evening and is due at Wanganui on the early tide to-day. The vessel has a full load of genera; c u-go from Dunedin and Timaru. W1 ■ her sister ship, the m.v. Gale, whit . returned to the coastal trade towaid the end of last year the Breeze served as a minesweeper in New Zealand waters before being attached to small task forces in the Pacific. After discharge of her southern cargo at Wanganui, the Breeze sails to-morrow for Wellington. It. is not known when she will visit Wanganui again after the present trip.

R.S.A. Bowling Green Following representations made by lhe Wanganui branch of the Returned Services’ Association, a sub-com-mittee of the City Council has recommended that site for a R.S.A. bowling green be allocated at the rear of the vacant land in Ridgway Street, adjoining the motor vehicle testing station. The sub-committee, in a report adopted by the council at its meeting last night, stated that it had inspected several areas of city land likely to be suitable for laying out as a bowling green. Terms and conditions of occupancy, and also the construction ci' the proposed green, aie to be considered later. The sub-com-mittee consisted of the Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, and Crs. J. W. Broad C. S. Smith and J. C. Batt, and the city engineer, Mr. L. F. Row.
