REFUGEES KILLED

GERMAN SHELLFIRE IN THE BALKANS Recd. 10 p.m. Washington. Aug. 22. German shellfire killed more than 250 refugees travelling from Rumania to Turkey in the 200-ton Turkish motor-ship Mefkura on August 5, said the executive director of the War Refugee Board, Mr. John Pehle. Only fiv#* refugees survived. The Mefkura was approached by three armed barges about midnight. German fire against the ship killed many. Those who leaped overboard were still fired on. The Turkish ship Bulbul, carrying 395 refugees, followed the Mefkura a few hours later, but though the German barges approached they did not fire on tne Bulbul, which picked up the Mefkura survivors. All the reI fugees are now en route to Palestine.
