Newton—McColl.— The engagement is announced of Barbara Joyce, only daughter of Mr. and the late Mrs. A. McColl, Omatane, Taihape, and Francis Morley, second son of the late Dr. F. M. Newton, Stoke-on-Trent, and Mrs. L. C. E. Newton, London, England. HITHER AND THITHER. Party at VVangaehu. While home on leave last week, Mr. Colin Jones was entertained at a party held at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. Jones, Wangaehu, when close on thirty guests were present. Cards and music were enjoyed and at supper a toast to the guest of honour was proposed by his uncle, Mr. W. Baldwin. First Aid Examinations. The Wanganui Sub-Centre Red Cross first-aid examinations were held during December when the following Voluntary Aids were successful:— Miss G. Adams, honours; Mesdames F. Buchanan, M. Benefield, M. Glengarry, L. Russell, E. Spooner, Misses Blake, E. Carmody, E. Cowan, B. Clapperton, N. Domney, I. Garrud, D. Gillman, J. McKinley, E. Pepper, G. Sopp. Human Skeleton as Christmas Gift. One of the strangest Christmas gifts received in Sydney was a human skeleton. An Australian airman serving in the Middle East sent the skeleton to a girl. She is studying medicine and in a letter mentioned that a skeleton was unprocurable in Sydney. Back came a letter to say that a “body” had been dispatched in three boxes. Sand adhering to the skeleton, which is affectionately called “Bill” by its owner, indicates that it has probably been buried in the desert for a number of years. Another unusual gift was a large potato sack full of manure. It was tied with a huge bow of pink satin ribbon and tipped with a sprig of holly. CROQUET. A match was played on Tuesday on the Wanganui Croquet Courts for the Crawford Cup between teams from Durie Hill and Wanganui, Wanganui winning by four games to two. The following are the scores, Wanganui players being mentioned first:— D. McClymont 2, v. C. La Roche 26; Mrs. Brass 26, v. Mrs. La Roche 10; Mrs. McClymont 15, v. Mrs. Bourgeois 26; Mrs. Bassett 26, v. Mrs. Ogier 22; Mrs. Brass and Mrs. McClymont 26, v. Mr. and Mrs. La Roche 15; D. McClymont and Mrs. Bassett 26. v. Mrs. Ogier and Mrs. Bourgeois 25.
