Miss Helen Laidlaw, who spent Christmas and New Yea*’ with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Laidlaw, Boydfield Street, Wanganui East, has returned to Wellington. A message from England states that a iNew Zealanders, Miss iris Edmonds, of Christchurch, has made a name for herself on the English provincial stage during the seven years she has been in England. She acts under the stage name of Iris Day, and her fine voice has won her much recognition. She has taken leading parts in variety, revue, pantomime, and cabaret. Last year she was principal boy in a pantomime in which George Robey played. This year she will appear in “Puss in Boots” in Glasgow. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Edmonds, formerly of Christchurch, now live in London. The death recently occurred in Wellington of Mrs. “Babs” Johnson, wife of Sergeant G. Johnson, R.N.Z. A.F. Mrs. junnson was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Meadowcroft, .Khandallah, Wellington (formerly of Chester, England) and a grandniece of the late Mr. Arnold Bennett and of Captain Edward Smith, former White Star Commodore, who commanded in turn the Olympic and the Titanic. Mrs. Johnson served in the 1914-18 war in the Old Country as a transport driver of the women’s section of the Royal Flying Corps. She is survived by four daughters.
