SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mrs. T. H. Rice, of St. John's Hill, is visiting Wellington. Miss Greer has returned to Wanganui from Auckland. Miss Margaret Merewether, W.A.A.C., Wellington, is on leave in Wanganui. Mrs. F. Croom, Moana Street, W’anganui East, left Wanganui last, week for Wellington, where she will in future reside. Miss B. Allan, Cains Avenue, is visiting Nelson. Mrs. P. Mayer, of Wellington, is visiting Mrs. W. Baldwin, Wangaehu. Mrs. E. Williams, of Newcastle, Australia, who recently journeyed by air to New Zealand, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. H. E. Scott, Kepa Street, Wanganui East. HITHER AND THITHER Wanganui East W.C.T.U. Members of the Wanganui East W.C.T.U. held their annual meeting recently in St. Alban's Hall, when officers for the year were elected. Mrs. Shield led the devotions. The best wishes of the union was extended to Miss Weston, who will be leaving the district shortly. Fourteen bags for the merchant seamen were handed in. The cradle party will take place at the end of the week. Work of Guides. Work done by Girl Guides included camouflage net making, a Wanganui company had collected 1000 books for the Merchant Navy; many companies had sent toys and garments for dispatch to England; the Wellington division had sent clothing for Polish Guides on board a refugee ship when it arrived at Wellington and with the equipment the children had started a» Guide company in their new home in Mexico. This was revealed in the annual report of the Wellington Provincial Girl Guides’ Association.

A Mayoress of Paeroa for 18 years, Mrs. Mabel Marshall, wife of Mr. W. Marshall, chairman of directors of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company Limited, has died aged 65. She was born in Manchester and came to. New Zealand in 1906, two years after her marriage. She and her husband lived in Auckland for 10 years before moving to Paeroa. Mrs. Marshall was president of the Girl Guides Association. She leaves her husband and three sons, and there are eight grandchildren.

At a British consulate, somewhere in North Africa, a few weeks ago, Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Tedaer, air commander-in-chief, Mediterranean Air Command, was married to Mrs. Marie Black, a member of the W.A.A.F. on service in North Africa. She is 35 years old and was previously married to a captain in the Royal Navy, whom she divorced. Sir Arthur Tedder, who is 53, was first married in 1915 to an Australian, Miss Rosalinde Maclardy, daughter of Mr. W. M. Maclardy, of Sydney. She was 1 ed in an air crash in North Africa X. January. There were three chilof the marriage—one daughter and two sons. One of the sons was killed during the present war.

ENGAGEMENT. Anderson—Kllgour-Carter. Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Carter, “Gowerfield,” Bulls, have pleasure in announcing the engagement of their only daughter, Beth, to Flight Sergt. Roy B. Anderson, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Anderson, London Street, Dunedin. W.D.F.U. WANGANUI BRANCH The last meeting for the year of the Wanganui branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held yesterday in the Y.W.C.A. Lounge. The president, Mrs. A. McPhail, presided and welcomed members. Sympathy with Mrs. Butcher in her illness was expressed and a box of flowers sent to her. Two remits from headquarters discussed. The president referreu to the two W.D. rest rooms recently acquired in the South Island and said the home at Nelson will probably be ready for guests some time in February. A letter of thanks was received from the provincial committee tQ the branch for providing afternoon tea, and a vote of thanks was accorded to Miss Worgan for her help. Mrs. F. H. Uttley gave a demonstration on the making of novelties for Christmas. She was presented with a posy. Afternoon tea was served. Before closing the meeting Mrs. McPhail extended good wishes for Christmas and the New Year and said members would meet aagin in February. HUNTERVILLE BRANCH A social afternoon was held in SI. Andrew’s Hail, Hunterville, on Thursday, November 11, to raise funds for branch and W.D. rest homes. There was a splendid attendance of members and friends. The produce and plant stall, with competition, realised just over £lB. Mr. S. Abel gave a very fine talk on his trip and experiences in Egypt, Palestine, Nazareth, and Taleviv, and many other interesting topics, which were enjoyed by ail present. Mr. Abel was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. A delightful item was staged by Miss E. Wells, Miss McLaughlan pnd Miss Winchcombe. Mrs. Walker sang a solo. Mrs. Wiltshire presented a very humorous sketch entitled “Peccodilo,” and a play by W.D. members, representing a meeting in a private home. A social chat and a dainty afternoon tea dispensed by Mesdames Lloyd Hammond, Pitcaithly, G. Simpson, and Leaning brought a pleasant afternoon to a close.

There was a splendid entry of flowers and the results were as follows:—Vase of flowers, Miss J. Brown 1, Miss Maundrell 2, Miss Aidworth h.c.; shoulder spray, Miss J. Brown 1, Mrs. M. Francis 2, Miss J. Aidworth h.c.; collection six roses, Mrs. Watt 1, Mrs. Harre 2, Mrs. P. Rhodes h.c.: collection cut owerfls, Mrs. Walker 1, Miss Brown 2, Mrs. Watt h.c.; bowl of flowers, Mrs. A. Bull 1, Miss J. Brown 2. Mrs. A. Aidworth h.c. Points prize was won by Miss J. Brown. Mrs. Noel Ross won the groceries competition, and Mrs. J. Lilburn the cake. For the December meeting the competition will be a shoulder spray.
