WANGANUI MAYORALTY
DEPUTATION TO WAIT ON DR. G. J. ADAMS PLANS FOR NEXT ELECTION A decision to organise a large and representative gathering to wait on Dr. G. J. Adams and ask him to consent to his nomination as candidate for the Mayoralty when the municipal elections are held next May was reached unanimously at a well-attend-ed meeting last night of the Wanganui Citizens’ Association.
Speakers expressed the opinion that Dr. Adams was eminently fitted to act as Mayor. His lengthy experience in many progressive organisg.tions in the city, combined with his ability and integrity, made him an outstanding personality who would earn the respect and appreciation of the general body of electors.
The question of party politics was discussed and general regret was expressed that they seemed to be looming largely in local body affairs in Wanganui. It was unanimously agreed that was no place for party politics in city affairs, and that as far as the Citizens’ Association was concerned “party” would be barred. The chairman, Mr. E. W. Merewether, said the Citizens’ Association was concerned for the welfare of all sections of the community—not any individual section only. The association had in its ranks men of the highest integrity and outlook who, when elected to various local bodies, would have a free hand to vote on any project in any way they pleased.
Mr.-Merewether added that he was sure the aim and ■ object of • every Citizens’ Association candidate would be not to vote on party lines, but for the interests of the city as a whole.
