The Chinese gained appreciable success in assaults on a stronehold north-west of Hankow. Along the 100-mile front from lungting Lake, where 60,000 Jaoanese swept into China’s “rice bowk" see-saw figfating continues. The reinforced Japanese made some gains and occupied several towns but the Chinese are attacking furiously and inflicting heavy casualties. At the eastern end of the Tungting line the Chinese gained some ground.
