SERIOUS SITUATION
CARGO PILING UP AT PORTS IN SOUTH ISLAND (P.A.) Christchurch, Aug. 30. The shortage of shipping between the South Island and the North has become so acute that, cargoes are piling up at South Island ports with little prospect under present conditions of having them shipped, it is stated. Immediate action is being sought by the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association. "The accumulation of goods for shipment to the North Island has ben giving the Council of the Association a great deal of concern, and over the last five or six weeks it has become increasingly difficult,” said the president of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, Mr. A. M. Hollander. "Some action should be taken by the authorities. If this is not done a complete breakdown of coastal and inter-Island transport will occur.” Stressing the seriousness of the situation, Mr. Hollander said that various goods were accumulating, both in sheds and in factories, while the North Island consuming public and the consigness were starving for the goods. "It is vital that the authorities take action imediately. otherwise the situation will become increasingly difficult to remedy and permanent damage may result.” added Mr. Hollander.
