GAOL FOR BARMAN
SOLD SLY-GROG TO SOLDIERS J (P.A.) Auckland, Aug. 30. A barman. Joseph Shannon, aged 35, who was seen by the police on Saturday night going into the house In which he lived near u dance-hall frequented by Maoris and negroes, was to-day charged before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., with keeping liquor for sale. The police saw Shannon come out of the house and leave something near the gate. Two servicemen then advanced and picked up what had been left. Later the police saw a number of servicemen surround Shannon, who returned to his house. Coming out again, Shannon placed a bottle of wine on the step near the gate. When accosted he said it was not his. In his room, which was searched, were six quart bottles of beer and also win? under the mattress of the bed. He was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment.
