INTERESTING PROGRAMMES AHEAD On Monday last, the first meeting of Business Girls’ Lyceum tor 1943 was attended by 30 members, presided over by Miss E. Cowen. Introducing a series of programmes on “Our New Zealand,” Miss E. D. Graham, gave an absorbing account of the discovery voyages, settlement of the pakeha, and by story and humorous anecdote pictured events and places of historical interest, and aspens of Maori culture. This will be followed next week by a talk on the “Life in a Maori Village, ‘ with particular reference to the social life and customs, by Miss Newton, ot the Technical College. It is intended to approach these programmes from the aspects of Maori culture, pioneer life, stories of early Wanganui, a study of place names, Maori folk lore, birds and bush, and general trends in development of civilisation up to the present time. There was a small attendance ol Live Y-ers on Wednesday night. Activities in the gym. and games room were the order of the evening, with a time for discussion on programme and clubs plans for the year. Thursday night saw Everygirls at their first meeting for the se'ason, and a good attendance enjoyed a programme of recreational activities under Miss Nora Brown, followed by the business meeting under the chairmanship df Miss M. Lee, president. “Dancing, Through the Ages” is the theme selected for programme, and Miss Swann was present to discuss methods of approach. Members were interested in the story of the Russian ballet, and at the next meeting Miss Swann will give the story outline and description of one of the well-known ballets, and two club members, Misses McCarthy and Lee, and also to contribute material in keeping with the Gubject.
A new group has been formed in the association, with membership o. porents of members, and women friends of the association. The second meeting was held on Thursday afternoon in the main lounge, and election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs. McCarthy; vice-president, Mrs. G. C. Clapperton; secretary, Mrs. C. C. Grant; programme convener, Mrs. K. Prouse; tea convener, Mrs. J. A. Scott. The club was popularly voted the “Blue Triangle Club,” and Mrs. J. P. Whitlock was appointed club adviser. Meetings arr to be held monthly, on the third Thursdays.
Gynasium classes are all reopening, wilh leadership as follows: Secondary girls, Mrs. M. R. Simpson; primary girls, Miss Nora Brown, physical kindergarten, Miss V. Hirons; secondary boys, Mr. H. Johnston; primary boys, Mr. Cjeorge Price.
