HITHER AND THITHER
Westmere Women’s Institute. The annual meetiiu; of the Westmere Women’s Institute was held recently in the school hall. There was a fair attendance. The meeting opened with the institute song, after which began a lengthy business programme. The usual monthly business, correspondence, etc., was auickly dealt with. Mrs. Jones, the secrelary, read the minutes of the previous annual meeting, which were cor.flremd. The financial statement was read bv Miss Smith, the treasurer. As nominations for the committee had not been in excess of the number required there was no need for an election, the committee this year comprising Mesdames Barnes, Corliss, Dickenson, A. Jones, Kirton, F. Laird, O'Reilly, Remington, Sarjeant, Wright, and Miss E. Smith.
Miss Smith was unanimously elected j president, and was welcomed into ; office by the retiring president, Mrs. i D. Preston. Dainty posies, artistically 1 arranged by Mrs. Flynn, were presented to these two ladies, also Mrs. A. Jones, the secretary, and to Mrs. Stevens, a valued member who is leaving the district. It was decided to support the proposal to hold confer- _ ence this year. Delegates to the forthoming annual council meeting ■ appointed were Mrs. Preston and Mrs. ' Wright. A short entertainment was begun by Mrs. Preston singing two soprano solos, with Mrs. Greenwood as accompanist. Mrs. Laird had arranged a “scavenger” hunt, which caused a (
great deal of amusement. Miss Bessie i Dawes proving the winner. The dav’s hostesses were Mesdames R. Taylor; and Mackintosh and Misses Laing and i: Winwood. Proceedings closed with the National Anthem.
