Superintendent N. M. Ross, of the Wanganui Central Fire Brigade, is spending a holiday at Taieri. Major T. H. Melrose, officer commanding the Hamilton Battalion of the Home Guard since its inception, has resigned owing to ill-health. Mr. Parker Hart’s appointment as Vice-Consul of the United States at Wellington was gazetted on Thursday. Mr. J. F. Frew, Mosgiel, Dunedin, was elected president of the New Zealand Master Bakers and Pastrycooks' Association for the ensuing year at the annual meeting of the association which opened in Wellington on Thursday. Mr. W. T. Ikin, general manager for New Zealand of the A.M.P. Society; Mr. H. L. Cranswick, general superintendent of agencies for Australia and New Zealand, and Mr. F. Chapman, of the Wellington office, are making a brief official visit to Wanganui. The Right Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland, Bishop of Wellington, is to visit Waitotara next week, and will conduct a confirmation service at St. Mark’s Church on Tuesday evening, Latter which he will be the guest of the parishioners at a supper-party to be held in the supper-room. Mr. Arthur Holder, ex-world 440 yards hurdles champion, is visiting Wanganui for the military athletic championship to-day. Mr. Holder was a member of the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club in the early 'eighties and in 1898 won the Australasian hurdles championship on Cook’s Gardens.

Mr. A. R. Merrington, M.A., formerly of Auckland, who attended his first meeting of the Taranaki Education Board at New Plymouth on Wednesday as the newly-appointed senior inspector, was welcomed by the chairman, Mr. J. A. Valentine. Mr. Merrington was, about two years ago, an inspector for the Wanganui Education Boapd. The death occurred on Tuesday evening, at the age of 63, of Mr. Charles William Ritchie, J.P., a prominent citizen of Featherston. Born at East Maitland, Australia, he arrived in New Zealand about 30 years ago, and soon afterward entered the office of Mr. J. W. Card, as accountant, a position he continued with tfce firm of Messrs. Card and Lawson up to the time of his death. Besides his office duties he was auditor for the Automobile Association (Wairarapa) and the Mutual Insurance Company. He was associated with that body, also the Loyal Unity Lodge of Oddfellows, anc acted in an honorary capacity for several local institutions. He was a worker on the patriotic committee and was interested in church matters as a vestryman of St. John's Church. A past grand steward of the Masonic Grand Lodge of New Zealand, Mr. Ritchie was for many years, up to the time of his death, secretarj' for the local St. John's Masonic Lodge.
