ACCIDENT AT OHAKUNE

BOROUGH FOREMAN KILLED While felling a tree in the Ohakune Reserve, near the railway line to Raetihi, at 11.15 a.m. yesterday, Mr. Thomas Bernard O'Connell, married, aged 50, foreman of the Ohakune Borough Council, was struck by a limb and killed instantly. Another employee who was working with him, Mr. Jack Watson, was injured and taken to the Raetihi Hospital. When the accident occurred the two men were working alone. The falling tree struck another in its path, knocking off a limb which killed Mr. O'Connell and injured his companion. Mr. Watson was • knocked unconscious and no knowledge of the accident was obtained till other employees returned to the reserve after lunch. They found that Mr. Watson had recovered consciousness and had crawled some distance to seek assistance.

An inquest was opened in Ohakune yesterday afternoon and after evidence of identification had been taken was adjourned sine die.
