U-BOAT MENACE
IMPORTANT BRITISH INVENTION London, March 14. Vice-Admiral Snagge, former admiral superintendent at Devonport dockyards, in a speech said he could reveal that the problem of the U-boat was on the point of being solved, if it was not already solved. He was unable to say more at present. Recent optimistic official statements with reference to U-boat warfare point to a new British invention whicn may be as valuable in its results in sea warfare as radiolocation has been against enemy planes, reports the Sunday Express. The invention has been thoroughly tested for some time in co-operation with planes - and naval vessels with extremely encouraging results. No further details can at present be revealed. Another important sea warfare development is the allocation of a very large number of Halifaxes, Liberators, and Flying Fortresses to Coastal Command for long-distance convoy escort and anti-U-boat patrol, which has resulted in what is known as the danger gap in the mid-Atlantic being considerably narrowed.
