BRIDGES’ DOUBLE SCULLS
WIN FOR BOYI-AND’S CREW The semi-final and final for the Bridges Double Sculls, competed for annually by the Aramoho Boating Club, were rowed against an incoming tide and a stiff breeze. In the semi-final R. Boyland (str.), C. Taylor (bow) and E. La Prou (cox) beat J. Stokes (str.), N. Nelson (.bow) and M. Downey (cox). In the final Boyland's crew beat D. Frost (str.), A. Gifford (bow), and E. La Prou (cox). , , .. The race for the semi-final saw both crews jump away to an even start, but settling down Boyland drew ahead and at Webb's Shed was leading byhalf a length. At this stage Stokes began to draw up, but in spite of strenuous efforts could not catch the leaders, who crossed the line with a length to spare. In this race both bow men were first-year members and although sculling conditions were not ideal they put up a good performance and sculled very cleanly. The final proved the most exciting race of the day, both crews being all out to win the trophy. At the gun the crews shot away to a flying start, each striving to gain the lead. At Webb’s Shed they were still rowing neck and neck. Passing the cliffs frost was leading by a canvas, but Boyland drew up and at Gibson Street the crews were again level. Boyland and Taylor, sculling with precision, managed to stave off a strong challenge by Frost and crossed the finishing post half a length to the good. Although entries for this trophy were not as large as In pre-war days, all races were keenly contested and a good standard of sculling was shown by crews.
