INVERCARGILL SHAKEN

PRONOUNCED EARTHQUAKE (P.A.) Invercargill, Feb. 17,

Invercargill received a perceptible shaking for about three minutes from 2.15 p.m. to-day. The earthquake, though not violent, was stated to be one of the most pronounced for years. Earth tremors, running apparently in waves from east to west, began to be felt slightly at first. Within a few seconds suspended electric light globes btgan to swing, the stout walls of business premises creaked and strained, and a certain amount of consternation was aroused among the staffs as the swaying reached its height. The undulated movements continued for over a minute after reaching their strongest point. A few occupants of business premises made a quick exit to the streets, but in some cases the disturbance was not even noticed. Few people on the streets were made aware of the movement.

The earthquake was felt slightly at such centres as Gore, Bluff and Riverton. but there are no reports of any dislodgment of the overhanging portions of buildings.
