ROOSEVELT’S NEW DEAL AMERICAN PARTISANSHIP MAY CAUSE SPLIT. (Recd. 7.5 p.m.) New York. Feb. 16. “Mr. Roosevelt’s New Deal faces a revolt all down the line which is so serious that it can no longer be ignored,” says the Christian Science. Monitor’s Washington correspondent. “The revolt may have international repercussions of a most far-reaching nature. The opposition already is so strong that even obvious matter postwar planning is opposed simply because the administration favours It. Partisanship will possibly defeat a new international order or a League of Nations similar to 1910. Washington quarters believe that if elections were held to-morrow a Republican landslide would result. They point out a significant series of administration legislative defeats, such as the Flynn nomination, the limitation of salaries to 25,000 dollars, and the cancellation of free mailing privileges for Government officers. These typical instances illustrate that the administration no longer controls Congress, but that control is now vested in the Republicans, plus the conservative southern Democrats, while New Dealers are in a minority third group." The Herald-Tribune says that the administration suffered a further severe set-back to-day when the House appropriations sub-committee rejected Mr. Roosevelt’s request for 100,000,000 dollars designed to increase food production by a subsidy for crops. The correspondent explains that the sub-committee move is part of the farm bloc’s effort to put through its own programme to raise all agricultural prices, which, according to estimates of the agricultural department, would increase the nation's food and clothing costs by at least 7,500,000,000 dollars annually.
