MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE
SUSPECT ARRESTED AFTER SOLDIER’S DEATH (P.A*) Auckland, Feb. 15. Arising out of the death of Private William Morrison, aged 49, who was picked up on the trotting course at Epsom on Saturday, the police arrested a suspect, and this morning John Kelly, aged 42, appeared in the police court before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., on a charge that on February 13 he unlawfully killed Morrison thereby committing manslaughter. Detective-Sergeant Tretheway obtained a remand for a week. Mr. J. J. Sullivan, for accused, asked for bail and said the police had no objection. Detective Tretheway said it was alleged that accused had struck Morrison. “So far as we know there was oniv one blow.’’ The magistrate asked if accused was a resident of Auckland. Mr. Sullivan replied that he was in business here. Bail at £lOO was allowed.
