FATALITY AT DUNEDIN
STEAM-ROLLER OVERTURNS (P.A.) Dunedin, Jan. 27j A City Corporation 15-ton steamroller got out of control in York Place about 4.50 to-day and capsized at the intersection of York Place, Stuart and Albert Streets. The only occupant was the driver, who died a few minutes after being removed from the overturned vehicle. His name was John Smith, middle-aged, living at 8 Islington Street. North-east Valley. Traffic at the time was fairly heavy, including cable-cars to Kaikorai, and it was provdiential that no one was injured. Eye-witnesses state that the roller got out of control some distance up York Place and that the driver appeared to make an effort to turn into Albert Street, which runs uphill, but that the axle broke and the vehicle capsized.
They speak highly of the braveryshown by a returned officer who, at great risk, pulled Smith from the roller, from which great quantities of steam were escaping.
