MARTON NOTES

FLAG AT HALF-MAST NATIONAL SAVINGS CAMPAIGN Just over half the required amount to fill the Marton quota has so far been subscribed this week to the National Savings campaign. There is urgent need for another £l5O before the end of the week if Marton is to maintain the very fine reputation it has built up as a regular "quotaraiser” during the past eighteen months. No amount is too large and none too small to assist in raising the flag to the masthead. MARTON DISTRICT A. AND P. ASSOCIATION RAM SHOW CLASSES In order to keep the identity of the Marton District A. and P. Association before exhibitors and ram breeders, the association arranged for two classes each of Romney Marsh and Southdowns to be competed for at the Marton Ram Fair at Marton on Thursday. Unfortunately the Romney Marsh classes did not draw the exhibitors as anticipated, but the Southdown classes provided keen competition, there being nine exhibitors. Mr. Joseph Webb, of Taihape, judged both the Romney Marsh and Southdown classes and was very pleased with the class of stock that was exhibited. In the Romney Marsh classes Mr. G. L. Marshall had a "walk-over” and secure all the prize tickets, and wins Messrs. G. L. Marshall and D. J. Willis’ silver challenge perpetual cup for the competition for the best pen of four flock rams, and also Mrs. J. H. McLean’s silver challenge cup for one flock ram under 21 months, with first and second awards.

In the Southdown flock ram classes for pens of four rams, Mr. A. C. Vile secured first and second awards, Messrs. B. Illston and Sens’ entry was third and Mr. R. J. Kilgour-Carter’s entry was very highly commended. Mr. A. C. Vile has now won the local members’ of the Southdown Society’s silver challenge cup, valued at 10 guineas, three times—in 1940. 1941, second in 1942, and a win in 1943. In Southdown flock rams (natural condition), one flock ram under 21 months, Messrs. B. Illston and Sons’ entry was placed first. Mr. P. J. Andrews’ entry second, Messrs. Read Bros.’ entry third, and Mr. G. L. Marshall’s entry v.h.c. CIVIC THEATRE, MARTON Abbott and Costello in their brief but spectacular career have portrayed detectives, cowboys, sailors, soldiers, mechanics, and carnival spielers. In their newest Universal comedy, "Pardon My Sarong,” at the Civic Theatre to-morrow, they will appear as bus drivers who later become castaways on an uncharted South Sea island. Virginia Bruce has the leading feminine role and the every imposing cast includes Robert Page and Leif Erikson. Other notables in the line-un are Lionel Atwill, Nan .Wynn and Samuel S. Hinds. Entertaining novelties are promised by the appearance of Tip Tap and’ Toe, dancers, the Saronga Dancing Girls and the Four Ink Spots or radio, stage and juke-box fame. Heading a fine supporting programme is another of that fine series March of. Time, this issue being entitled “Men of Washington.” TURAKINA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY Turakina will be en fete to-morrow when the 25 th annual gathering of the Caledonian Society will be held. The programme includes championships in piping nd dancing and a ladies’ competition for piping. There is also a prize for the best hack. Light refreshments can be obtained on the ground. In the evening a dance will be held in the Turakina Town Hall. COURT LITTLE JOHN A.O.F.
