JAP SHIPS AT KISKA

HITS BY U.S. BOMBERS Washington, Jan. 1. A Nevy Department communique states that a lorce of Mitchell medium bombers, escorted by Lightning lighters, was intercepted by four Japanese Zero float planes while proceeding to attack two enemy cargo ships at Kiska harbour. Two Lightnings and one Zero were shot down. The Mitchells attacked the enemyships, with uncertain results. One ot our bombers was shot down. At 1.47 a.m. on December 31, United States medium bombers again attacked enemy ships in Kiska harbour. Three hits were observed on one ship and two hits on the other. The attackers lost no planes. At 4.30 p.m. on December 31 a task force oi Marauder medium bombers, escorted by Lightnings and Airacobra fighters, bombed the airfield at Munda (New Georgia Island). Results are nit reported. United States troops on Guadalcanar killed 20 Japanese during routine patio' activity.
