BOXING HIT BY WAR New York, Dec. 30. The war has seriously affected boxing in America, according to The Ring. Over 50 per cent, ot the bo\ing clubs closed down in 1942 and more than 2000 professional and amateur boxers, including four world champions, have entered the armed forces. The Ring named Ray Robinson, the negro welterweight, as the outstanding boxer of the year. The featherweight champion Willie Pep, defeated Joe Silva, of Mexico, by a technical knock-out ,in the nintn round of a bout at Jacksonville, Florida.
Harry Bobo won a points decision in a ten-round bout over Buady Walker. The Boxing Commission oi Columbus, Ohio, has recognised Bobo as the “duration heavyweight champion of the world.”
Frank Kovacs and Bobby Riggs made their professional tennis debut in New York, Kovacs beating Don Budge, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, and Riggs beating Fred Perry, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Pancho Segura, champion of Ecuador, beat Glen Gardner, 6-1, 6-0, in the opening of the Sugar Bowl tennis tournament.
Many big league baseball teams, including the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, New York Yankees, and St. Louis Cardinals, are abandoning their Florida training camps because of transportation difficulties and are seeking camps nearer their home cities.
The major leagues are preparing to ship 36,000 baseballs, 9000 bats, and 400 catching nets to the armed services.
Hal Schumacher, Giants pitcher, has been commissioned a lieutenant in the navy. John Borican, negro holder of numerous world tracks records, died in New Jersey after a mysterious illness lasting thre* 1 months, during which he lost 601 b. until he weighed only 1101 b. Ice hockey.—New York Rangers beat Boston Bruins, 5-3. It was Bruins’ first defeat in eleven games.
All Stars beat Washington Redskins, 17-14, in a professional football match at Philadelphia. Upwards of 75,000 dollars was. realised, for the United Seamen’s Fund. Christian (Red) Cagle, former army footballer, died in a Long Island hospital from a fractured skull received when he fell down subway stairs.
