CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT

WANGANUI BOWLING CENTRE SECTION PLAY ENDS When section play in the Wanganui Bowling Centre’s Christmas tournament ended yesterday only five teams had qualified for post-section play. The successful teams were skipped by Gaunt, Kirkwood, W. Pepper, Benefield and Raine. Kirkwood, W. Pepper and Benefield are members of the St. John’s Club and Gaunt and Raine Wanganui East. The draw for the first r jund ot post-section play, which will commence at 9 a.m. on the St. John s green to-day, is: Gaunt v. Kirkwood; W. Pepper v. Benefield; Raine. a bye. The wmner of the Gaunt-Kb kwood game will have the bye in the second round, and the winner of the PepperBenefield game will play Raine. The losers in the first round will play eacn other in the second round. The team entered by Kirkwood was skipped by A. Pepper, the former being called for essential work prior to the commencement of the tournament. Raine suffered his first loss in section play in the eighth round when, after playing an extra end, he was defeated by Corby by one point. In the ninth round K- kwood and McArthur, with six wins, played each other. Kirkwood won and went forward to post-section play. Fyfe and Steel both suffered defeats in the Jest round yesterday, which put them out of post-section p’ay. An extraordinary incident occurred in the Lowe-McArthur game. When the skips changed over Lowe was one down on the head and failed to improve. McArthur’s three asked for a fast one through the head. This seemed strange as they were only two down on the board and one up on the head. The drive was a wild one, hit a wing bowl and cannoned on to another. went through the head and took Lowe's only bowl out, leaving McArthur six up.
