DEPLETED RAILWAY STAFF
LOCOMOTIVE BRANCH PROBLEMS The extent to which the staff had been reduced since the outbreak of 1 war was stressed by Mr. C. O. Sander, locomotive foreman, Wanganui. when giving evidence before the No. 3 Armed Forces Appeal Board yesterday. The Director of National Service, Wellington, appealed for the Railway Department on behalf of three locomotive firemen and one ' turner and litter. The appeals were i adjourned sine dip. I Mr. Sanders said he did not know ■ what would happen in an emergency. I The Wanganui locomotive district extended from Marton to New Plymouth. Attached to it were 35 engines “which required 105 drivers a similar number of firemen and 20 cleaners for depot duties. I The actual strength of the motive I power branch in the district was 160 I drivers and firemen and 20 cleaners. ! Two of the firemen appealed for were i in Taihape and one was in Stratford. Each man was working from 50 to 60 hours a week. They would be very difficult to release because of the time taken Io train skilled men. One of the men was firing express trains on the main lie'.
