REBUILDING AUCKLAND CHIEF POST OFFICE
EARLY START EXPECTED Auckland, Aug. 13. An early start is expected to be made with alterations and interior rebuilding at the Chief Post Office which have been planned for a long time and which are estimated to cost about £33,000. They are designed to improve the facilities for the public and the accommodation for the staff. The first part of the scheme to be put in hand will be the removal of the private letter-boxes from the ground floor to the basement and the transfer of the slot telephone booths from the front of the building to the basement at the north end. An additional 154 private letter-boxes are to be provided and access will be obtained from the side street as well as Queen Street. It is also proposed to remove the posting-boxes in the vestibule to the street level, so that letters and packets may be picked up on the recently - installed conveyor system. Public space on the main floor will be trebled by setting back counters on all sides and a portion of the money xg- and savings bank staff will be to the floor above. ; Scommodation will i be one iVements.
