RETURNED SOLDIERS RESENTFUL

REMARKS OF MR. CLYDE CARR ON THE FLAG •‘A DIRECT INSULT” (Press Assn.) Wellington, Aug. 13. Reference to the recent discussion in Parliament on saluting the flag vas made during a meeting of the Dominion Executive Committee of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association. The following tesolution was adopted unanimously: "That the Domimon Executive Committee of the N.Z.R.S.A. strongly resents the remarks of the Rev. Clyde Carr. M.P., in the House on August 8, as reported in the Press as follows: ‘I know that some people are dependent on ritual observances, and that people with fairly primitive minds want to salute the flag and go through some mumbo jumbo. Teachers are people who have read widely and studied deeply, and have got away from the kindergarten methods of thinking and acting, and it is pretty hard to expect them to bow down before a totem pole.’ If Mr. Carr is correctly reported the Dominion Executive Committee regards his words as a direct .insult to the flag itself, and to all those who salute it, proudly, reverently and on proper occasions.” It was decided that copies of the resolution be sent, to the acting-Prime Minister, Hon. W. Nash, and Mr. Carr.
