'Y’O-DAY the public of Wanganui will be invited to contribute
to the funds of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and it is to be hoped that .the appeal by the members of this society will be well responded to, for the cause is a worthy one. Animals depend upon their own efforts while running in a natural state, but immediately they are domesticated they come under the will of man, serving his needs, and subject to his good or illwill. Unfortunately for domestic animals, there are still individuals who do not appreciate their duty to their dumb helpers with sufficient acuteness, and it often happens that the restraining hand must be applied. Who shall take on this unpleasant duty when it becomes a necessary function? It is not everyone who has either the time or tire necessary combative spirit, nor indeed is it desirable that everyone should undertake the task of defending animals, because many have sympathies but lack the necessary tact to handle situations which are essentially difficult. It is better that those who are skilled in such matters should be engaged to do this work, and in order that this shall be done it is necessary that the public support the society whose especial function it is to look after the animal friends of
