Eclipse of the Moon A penumbral eclipse of the moon, which takes place to-morrow, will be visible in Wanganui. The moon rises at 6.23 p.m., 40 minutes after the beginning of the eclipse. Three-quarters of its surface will be in shadow by 8 p.m. and the moon will be fully clear again by 10 p.m. Riflemen on Service A national register is being prepared of all New Zealand riflemen who have enrolled for war service. At Ihe annual meeting of the Patea Defence Rifle Club the secretary of the National Rifle Association of New Zealand asked for help in obtaining names for the register.— (“Chronicle" correspondent). No Rifle Barrels Because of the speeding up of New Zealand’s defence programme it will not be possible for members of rifle clubs to obtain rifle barrels from the Army. Advice to this effect was received at the annual meeting of the, Patea Defence Rifle Club from the' secretary of the National Rifle Association of New Zealand.—(“Chronicle” correspondent). Cricket Entries. The Wanganui senior cricket championship will be contested this season by six teams, the same number as last year. The teams are: Wanganui, United, Technical Old Boys, Marist, Wanganui Collegiate School and Wanganui Technical College. The junior championship will be contested by fewer teams than last year. The new season will be officially opened on Saturday, October 26. Provincial Patriotic Fund. The treasurer of the Wanganui Provincial Patriotic Fund Controlling Committee acknowledges the following donations to the Provincial Patriotic Fund for the week ended October 11:—Mrs. Barkman, "comforts for the Navy,” £l3 Os 9d; Aotea Maori Women's Patriotic Association, £l9; Maypole Anti-aircraft Gun Appeal, £216 19s Id; Seafield Country Golf Club, £7 19s; Girls’ College. £1 ss. Wanganui Patriotic Committee. At a meeting of the Wanganui City Patriotic Committee held yesterday, Messrs. N. R. Bain and D. G. O’Toole were added to the Finance Sub-Com-mittee, the chairman of which is Mr. F. H. Bethwaite. Mr. C. R. White (town clerk) and Mr. F. J. Best (city treasurer) were added to the committee. Captain H. M. Keesing presided at yesterday’s meeting, and reported on arrangements made to establish a permanent headquarters for the committee, and on activities with regard to Wanganui military camps. Women’s Cricket The following officers were elected at last night’s annual meeting of the Wanganui Women’s Cricket Association: Patron, Mr. J. Siddells; president, Mrs. W. Young; vice-presidents. Mesdames H. H. Cave, MurrayLocket, senr., A. Bullock, B. Bates, Messrs. J. F. Broad, A. H. Steeds, H. Holroyd, F. Bristol, L. McNaught, R. E. Cuthbertson, and F. W. Gilligan; secretary and treasurer, Mrs. M. Simpson; auditor, Mr. L. Droomgoole, committee, Misses K. Lockett, J. Hall, N. McFarland, and M. Maras.

Homes for British Children. Unless the scheme to evacuate British children to New Zealand is continued, no further offers of homes from Wanganui and district people are required. The Mayor of Wanganui (Hon. W. J. Rogers) has received a circular to this effect, also a personal letter from the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. W. E. Parry) expressing thanks for what had been done in the city and Wanganui district to aid the scheme. It has been disappointing to many people that children have not been sent to them. Mr. Parry stated in his letter, but if the scheme is resumed they will be

sent to those districts which have, so far, not received any children.

Cooking Competition. One of the means to be adopted by the Wanganui City Patriotic Committee for the purpose of raising funds towards the next big appeal is a cooking demonstration and competition with rather unusual features. A competition is to be started and judged, and the finalists will cook in a public competition on the Opera House stage during a specially arranged patriotic concert. “Aunt Daisy” will be the judge on the stage. It is proposed also to stage a cooking competition between three or four leading citizens, probably the Mayor (Hon. W. J. Rogers), the chairman of the city committee (Captain H. M. Keesing), and the president of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce (Mr. D. G. O’Toole).

Rugby Players Retire. Two of the most prominent Rugoy footballers in the Hawke's Bay province, Maurice Dyer and Doug Dalton, have announced their retirement Both have played in Wanganui in representative matches and are players w'th a great reputation, Dalton as as Al. Black forward of four seasons’ standing, and Dyer as Hawke’s Bay’s best full-back for many years. Dalton first came into prominence after his return from the All Black tour of Creat Britain in 1935. He represented New Zealand against Australia in 1938 and on home grounds in 1936 and 1937. Since 1935 he has been a regular forward for Hawke’s Bay. For several months this year Dalton re- | sided in Wanganui, being employed on the building of the new post office.
