FARMING OF FIRST IMPORTANCE
MEN FOR MILITARY SERVICE MANPOWER COMMITTEE’S ASSURANCE [ Ter Press Aesoeiat.'ea. ] HASTINGS, Aug. 1. The opinion that the mounted rifles Territorial camp, which is scheduled to be held from January 1 would cause difficulty to farmers in the release of men was expressed at a meeting of the Hawke's Bay provincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. Members appreciated the need for defence training, but felt that the defence authorities might be able to arrange the camp for a more suitable period of the year.
Mr. H. J. McKeesick said he felt certain the Manpower Committee would receive a sheaf of appeals. Mr. N. C. Marriott, secretary of the Manpower Commil *ee, who undertook to refer objections to Wellington, suggested that men on farms anxious to get into camp but who were urgently required on the farms should be spoken to and it should be explained they were as essential on the farm as in the front line. He knew they were hard to convince, he said, but they must be made to realise that they were filling responsible positions.
