Motorist’s Plight Near Raetihi

HANGING HEAD DOWN FOR NINE HOURS COMPOUND FRACTURE OF LEG Following a trying ordeal throughout the greater part of Wednesday night, pinned to the floor-boards ol an overturned car and suffering lioir. the cold, with painful injuries, including a fractured leg. Mr. Fraser Scott, a fanner, living near Raetihi, was admitted to the Raetihi Public Hospital yesterday morning. A break-down outfit from Webb Motors, Raetihi, uiidei the direction of Constable Cave, worked front 7 a.m. till 9.15 a m. in oruer to extricate Mr. Scott from the wreckage of his car. About 11.45 p.m. on Wednesday, Mt. Scott, whose farm is on the Mangaetoroa Road, about 12 miles trom Kaetihi, was motoring home with a passenger, Mr. Warren Tahana. Vvunm two miles of his home, when attempting to turn a corner on a road less than 10ft. wide, Mr. Scott's car ran off the road and overturned, ine trunk of a tree pierced the windscreen anc pinned Mr. Scott's legs to the liooiboards, with the resuit that he was hanging head down. His companion did not recover consciousness ior a considerable time, but on coming to his senses Mr. Tahana found himself unable to relieve the driver and sought assistance from a farm-house in the vicinity. By the time a break-down van could be summoned front Raetihi Mr. Scott had been hanging head down for several hours. He was attended by Dr. W. J. Feltham, who administered drugs to relieve his suffering. Alter more than two hours' strenuous work on the part of the rescue party, assisted by many neighbouring farmers, Mr. Scott was removed trom the wrecked car, it being tound that his left leg was badly iractured and the other was severely bruised. He was conveyed to the Raetihi Public Hospital. His condition at a late hour last night was reported to be satisfactory.
