OBITUARY

MR. JAMES BROWN By the death of Mr, James Brown, which occurred last week alter a short illness, Wanganui lost a citizen of bO years’ standing, well known and respected by both the business and farming community. Born in Ireland 78 years ago, Mr. Brown went to England when a very young man, later working his way through America lor about live years before coming to New Zealand. After engaging in a variety of occupations, in one of which he operated the first road grader in this district lor the Waitotara County Council, Mr. Brown commenced business as a carriei, eventually becoming senior partner in the well-known firm of S. Wright and Co. In this capacity he was the pioneer of goods motor transport in this district and the first to engage in wool carrying on a large scale, having up to six motor trucks operating on one contract. Mr. Brown’s genial nature and natural Irish wit endeared him to a large circle of friends. He leaves a widow. A nephew, Mr. John Brown, a member of the Aramoho Boat Club’s champion eight, resided with him for some years. Mrs. W. G. Herd is a sister, and another sister, Mrs. C. Connolly, resided in Belfast, Ireland.
